Jovan Mixes Deep House & Hip-Hop in New Release

From what began as a beat created on Instagram Live, to premiering during her performance at the street festival "Argyle Night Market, to transforming it into a full-length song that was released today on all streaming platforms. The smooth deep house/hip-hop is a vibe that is reminiscent of rain, water dance an outpour of love for life.

As described in the title, “Bells in My Head” was a beatbox and melody idea that turned into a beat. Jovan Landry video recorded herself in real-time creating this instrumental with the intention of posting it on social media. For the second installment of her monthly music series, Jovan extended the 60-second excerpt into a two-minute experience.

"Just Practice" and "Soul Jounce" are the first tracks that will kick off my monthly music releases as a commitment to myself both as an emcee and beatmaker. Here's a big shoutout to Sarah, The Illstrumentalist dropping this free gem of a tip to stay consistent in this game. 

While it can pose a challenge, this will help Landry stay in the groove and keep her pen and finger-drumming sharp. Some of these tracks you'll hear are songs she’s held in her back pocket, and some are brand-spanking new. This is a lesson of releasing and allowing the world to listen to what Jovan offers.

Creating Synergy: From Production to Lyrics, This Album is All Women

The idea came to Landry, a filmmaker, photographer and emcee based in Chicago a few years back when she noticed the lack of opportunities for women to produce Hip-Hop music. The album will not only feature some of the hottest women emcees in Chicago, but every producer, engineer, videographer, photographer and graphic designer involved with the project is a woman.

The Gumbo talked to Landry about her introduction to Hip-Hop, the importance of creating a collaborative album by women only and how the culture of Chicago influences the music of its people.

Jovan’s Intensely Personal “Growth”

I’m growing as an MC,” Chicago rapper, photographer, and filmmaker Jovan Landry, who raps under the mononym Jovan, says outside of a Wicker Park bar where she’s just wrapped a lively set. She released her fourth album, Growth, at the end of October, and she’s speaking about the title’s relevance. “[This project has] different lyrical content, dealing with things that I usually don’t talk about—for example, my sexual identity, like queerness and falling in love and breaking up. I don’t really talk about that kind of stuff, but I think it’s important to talk about, especially in this era, to talk about what you stand for—what you believe in, what you feel.”
